Update from Project Archivist Sandra Hicklin on the York and Lancaster Regiment Archive Cataloguing Project
In August 2012, a sixteen month long project began to identify, sort and catalogue the records of the York and Lancaster Regiment. These are cared for by Rotherham Archives and Local Studies which is now based at Clifton Park Museum. The cataloguing project, which is funded by the National Cataloguing Grants Programme via the Pilgrim Trust/National Archives, is due for completion at the end of December 2013.
The York and Lancaster Regiment archive collection dates from around 1760 to 2000. It is made up of approximately 160 boxes of assorted paper records, volumes, publications and photographic material. The paper records include maps, reports, histories of the Regiment, and some personal papers, but not service records. These remain with the National Archives (First World War) and the Ministry of Defence (Second World War). The photographic material consists of approximately 9000 items, including negatives, slides, albums and photographs of all shapes and sizes. In July and August this year, a group of volunteers assisted the Project Archivist in sorting, identifying and repackaging these.
The collection is currently stored off-site from the Archives to allow the cataloguing work to be completed, and so it is currently inaccessible for remote enquiries or personal researchers. However, from January 2014, a detailed catalogue of the collection will be available in the Archives searchroom. This will also be placed online so it can be searched from anywhere in the world. Researchers can then request to see items in the searchroom, and the Archives staff will be able to answer enquiries more easily and in greater detail.
There is a full set of The Tiger and Rose, the journal of the York and Lancaster Regiment (1887-1986) and annual newsletters (1987-2006) currently available to customers in the Archives searchroom without prior ordering.
