Tuesday 29th November 2011

Branch members were in attendance at the funeral of 28 year old Private Matthew Adam Thornton of 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment who was killed in an  IED explosion in Afghanistan earlier this month.

With approximately 24 standards from around Yorkshire on parade, I doubt that Darton, his home town had ever seen such a spectacle. The churchyard was full with ex-service groups and local residents mingling together. The Church bell rang single peels at 10 second intervals from 10-45 till Matthews body was taken into the Church. The service was broadcast to the mourners who were stood in the Church yard and the surrounding streets. RIP. Sad Day

Remembrance Day Service

Members of the Branch attended the Remembrance Day service which was held at the Barnsley War Memorial on Sunday 13th November 2011 at 11.00 am. The Worshipful the Mayor of Barnsley Councillor Karen Dyson was also present.

Everyone's thoughts were also for a local soldier in the T.A. Private Matthew Thornton, from 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, who was killed just 48 hours before Remembrance Day.

"The Keeper of Souls Statue"

Members and guests attended the unveiling and dedication of the statue which was unveiled at the National Memorial Arboratum in Staffordshire. The statue was unveiled by HRH Prince Andrew Colonel in chief of the Yorkshire Regiment.
The Yorkshire Regiment badge is cut at the top of the statue, a smaller motif of all the other past infantry regiments of Yorkshire are cut around the cental column.
The sculpture was cut from Yorkshire sandstone by the masons of the York Minster.
The weather was brilliant and we all had an enjoyable day.

July 30th 2011            Pea and Pie Supper

A very pleasant evening was enjoyed by a somewhat diminished number of members and guests at the pea and pie supper held at the TA centre Wakefield Road on 30th July . Vick is to be complemented for the effort he put in to get everything in place, we also owe a debt of thanks to Dave for setting up the room and kitchen facilities. We must try to make more use of the TA centre we have not had a bad function at any time there.
Bon appetite.

The meeting of the Pals scooter club took place at Silverwood camp Silkstone again this year . Syd was invited to lay lay the wreath in the outdoor chapel on behalf of the members of the scooter club. The ceremony was completed in under 30 minutes and we left without waking any of the 1500 scouts and guides camped for the weekend in Silverwood. Syd also layed a wreath on behalf of the branch on the Boundary stone.
